A good leather belt is something you'd expect to keep for years, sometimes even decades. But what happens when it is starting to look a little worse for wear? Can a leather belt actually be restored or does it need to be replaced?
The short answer: if it is a full grain product, YES, your belt can be repaired, but the extent of the damage matters.
In this guide, we break down what’s fixable, what’s not, and how to make your belt last as long as possible.

Natural Aging v Damage - Understand the Differences
When we talk full grain, some people mistake natural aging for damage.
Small cracks on the surface of full grain leather can often be treated with conditioners and oils. These replenish moisture and restore flexibility. We offer a wonderful range of leather care products designed to restore leather surfaces.
Dryness or surface dullness can usually be improved through gentle cleaning and reconditioning. In this case, we always suggest to remove the cause in the first instance - check how it is stored and under what conditions (leather doesn't like to be hot, cold or humid).
What Can’t Be Repaired?
For full grain belts, if cracking goes all the way through the belt, the structural fibres are already broken. This happens in conditions where full grain belts are not well looked after or exposed to certain environmental conditions.
If your Split Cowhide Leather belt is peeling, it’s likely that a coating is failing and it is the trigger to replace your belt. Coatings are found on leathers originating from the lower layers where the grain has been subsequently removed. A coating which is in the order of 1/10th of a millimetre is applied to offer texture and colour to this leather.
Depending on how well you look after your Split Cowhide leather belts, it should last you somewhere between 3-5 years, if not more. We offer a 12-month warranty on Split Cowhide leather belts.
