History
Since 1922, when Sandy Buckle and his son Alick started BUCKLE, we have been creating a tradition of craftsmanship and quality in leather products. Unlike many other manufacturing processes, belt making is essentially still a craft. The working of quality leather requires the skill of an artisan. Machinery, even today, is only an aid to these manual skills.
Each BUCKLE belt is made individually at our workshop located in the Sydney suburb of Summer Hill. The most basic belt goes through 21 different operations before it leaves our factory. Each step is handled by skilled people who want you to have the finest product possible.
We offer our collection to you confident that you will appreciate the unmatched craftsmanship and quality in each piece.
Timeline of events
In 1922, Sandy Buckle and his son Alick Buckle started what is now known today as BUCKLE.
In 1925, the business was officially named “A. Buckle & Son” in anticipation of Alick and his wife expecting a son.
In 1926, Alick’s family was blessed with a baby girl whom they named Peggy.
In 1929, the business was registered as a company, with the name “A. Buckle & Son” sticking, even though there was no son! Alick was well regarded in the community, also holding title of Mayor of Mosman. Also in 1929, he officially opened the Bathers Pavilion, a heritage building and very popular restaurant located on Sydney’s Balmoral Beach. He was also involved in the beautification project of Balmoral Beach during this period. In addition, he named the island that is positioned in front of Bathers Pavilion, “Peggy’s Island” after his daughter. In 1965, Alick Buckle passed away leaving the business to Peggy, her husband Rex Morris and their children, Jacquie and Paul. It was only a matter of time before Jacquie and Paul started to work within the family business.
In 1968, A. Buckle & Son had been duly elected a full member of the Chamber of Manufacturers of NSW.
In 2004, Peggy alongside her daughter Jacquie established Ecclisse – a successful brand of ladies accessories. The brand made regular appearances in Harpers Bazaar and Marie Claire. It is currently ranged in Myer and David Jones.
In 2011, the business is directed by Jacquie Randall, Dave Randall and Paul Morris. Also in 2011, the company launched a new men’s accessories brand called Smith Street (www.smith-street.com.au) and acquired a dynamic stainless steel jewellery brand called Tuskc (www.tuskc.com).
This year, BUCKLE will celebrate 90 years of business.
